Description

Be safer and more comfortable on your boat with Total Boat Two Part Polyurethane Marine Expanding Foam. This US Coast Guard compliant pour foam is commonly used to add buoyancy to keep a boat afloat if hull integrity is compromised. Its closed cell foam structure enables it to resist water absorption for many years, making it ideal for filling pontoons and cavities in kayaks and beneath boat decks. 2 Lb. density expanding urethane foam kit mixes to form a fast-setting, pourable liquid foam that cures to a rigid, lightweight material that’s also great for filling gaps, soundproofing, and providing thermal foam insulation and nonstructural support in a variety of marine, household and art applications.

Two part flotation foam has a simple 1:1 mix ratio that makes it easy to use. Warm conditions of 75-85°F are very important, as are accurate measuring, thorough mixing, and proper venting of the area where the foam is to be applied, because it expands tremendously by volume. Just mix one part resin and one part activator, stir vigorously for about 25 seconds to mix completely and pour immediately into the prepared area. Expanding foam will distribute itself evenly – even into irregularly shaped areas. Cured foam hardens into shape, with minimal shrinkage, and can be cut to shape easily. Once fully cured, any areas exposed to sunlight should be laminated or painted over with polyester, epoxy or vinyl ester coatings. For best results filling larger areas, pour in multiple layers to allow proper cure and maximum strength bonding between layers. Always wear proper eye, face and clothing protection when you mix and pour two part marine foam.

This two-part liquid mix and pour foam for flotation and insulation has a simple 1:1 mix ratio that makes it easy to measure and easy to use.

There’s no such thing as an unsinkable boat, but if the unthinkable happens, you can improve your chances of staying afloat. TotalBoat 2-Part Polyurethane 2 lb. Density Flotation Foam has been tested in accordance with US Coast Guard Regulation #33 CFR 183.114 (as of 5/17/2021) for flotation, making it ideal for small runabouts, kayaks, canoes, personal watercraft, and pontoons. It provides 75 lbs. of flotation per mixed 2-Quart Kit, and 300 lbs. of flotation per mixed 2-Gallon Kit. Use it to fill cavities under decks, in forward collision spaces, in hull voids, and in empty compartments. This lightweight, rapidly expanding foam is easy to use, sets up quickly, and cures at room temperature so it’s perfect for a number of marine, aircraft, RV, industrial, and artistic uses, such as soundproofing, thermal insulating, and other non-structural applications.

Mixed foam expands rapidly and tremendously by volume, so prep ahead of time and be ready to pour immediately after mixing.

Before you start mixing, be sure to wear a proper respirator, eye protection, protective gloves, and be sure your work area is well-ventilated. This pourable liquid foam is easy to use, but it’ll stick to almost everything. To help avoid messes and ensure proper adhesion, clean & prep the work area before you start mixing the foam components.

Once the resin and activator are combined, the rate of expansion varies greatly, depending on the temperature of the foam, ambient air, and work surface. The recommended temperature range is 75-80°F, for proper expansion. Keep in mind that you have only 25 seconds to mix the foam before it starts expanding, so be ready!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How large of a cavity can I fill with the 2 lb. density, 2-quart kit?

A: If you mix the full quart of resin and the full quart of activator, you can fill a cavity that is 2 cubic ft.

Q: Which is better to do – one big pour, or multiple small pours?

A: Multiple small pours are best to ensure a cavity is filled completely and to avoid expansion damage. Pour the next layer when the first layer has just started to set up.

Q: Can I shape and paint the dried foam?

A: Yes. After curing, TotalBoat Flotation Foam can be carved and sanded into shape. It can also be coated with epoxy, polyester resin, paint, or stain.

Q: What does 2 lb. density mean?

A: 2 lb. density refers to the weight of the foam per cubic foot of mixed material.

Q: Do you have other densities besides 2 lb. density foam?

A. Yes. A 6 lb. density foam for positive flotation and for structural applications is also available.

Keys to Success Using TotalBoat Flotation Foam

TotalBoat 2 lb. Density Flotation Foam expanded in kayak bow.

TotalBoat 2 lb. Density Flotation Foam drilling holes in the deck to allow overflow expansion.

Pouring TotalBoat 2 lb. Density Flotation Foam in a 1 to 1 mix ratio, into a clean mixing cup.

Stirring TotalBoat 2 lb. Density Flotation Foam thoroughly for approximately 25 seconds.

Air, foam, & surface temperatures must be 75-80°F for proper expansion.

TotalBoat Flotation Foam should be mixed and applied at a warm room temperature, 75-80°F is best. If the foam or the environmental conditions are too cool, the foam will shrink back after rising, losing much of its insulating properties and flotation strength. If needed, heat cavities or voids with a heat gun to raise the temperature before filling with foam.

Drill holes in decks to make room for the rapidly expanding foam.

TotalBoat 2 lb. Density Flotation Foam can exert as much as 5 psi of pressure in contained areas, which is enough to lift the deck off a boat if poured into cavities without proper venting. You may need to use a hole saw to cut overflow relief vents over large surface areas such as decks. For proper bonding, clean the surface so it’s free of contaminants.

Measure accurately: 1 part resin to 1 part activator, by volume.

Accurate measuring is critical. The simple 1:1 mix ratio of 1 part resin to 1 part activator makes it easy to get great results. Take care to estimate the proper amount of foam you’ll need. For purposes of calculating the proper amount based on a cured volume, mixing a full quart of Resin – Part A and a full quart of Activator – Part B yields 2 cubic feet of foam.

Stir for approximately 25 seconds, and pour immediately.

Always have good ventilation and wear a proper respirator, protective eyewear, and latex or nitrile gloves when working with pourable foam. You only have about 25 seconds to stir before foam starts rising. Be sure the substrate you’re pouring the foam into will not be harmed by the foam’s thermal reaction, which can reach temperatures nearing 130°F.
